Vor dem Gesetz

(1998)

for Soprano, Percussion & Electronics    ( ca. 8 min )

This piece is my first approach to the electronic music.

Inspired by the literature of Franz Kafka, I chose one of his narratives, "Vor dem Gesetz" ("Before the  Law") for the tape part  and a poem about him, "Die Bestrafung" ("The Punishment") by a Korean poet, Young-Ae  Chon for the live part.

Prior to the co-laboration with the Electronic Studio of Musikhochschule Basel (Swiss), I produced an accurately noted music score for the tape part in which a singer speaks and sings the text in layered rhythms. Consequently, this was recorded and rendered through  the various transformation possibilities: filtering, ring-modulation, pitch- shifting, delay and audio sculpt.

Together with the 20 different  characteristic live-electronic sound-transformations, the tape part accompanies the live play by Soprano and Percussion creating an absurd "kafkaesque" atmosphere.

produced by Co-operation with the Electronic Studio of Musikhochschule Basel, Switzerland

commissioned and premiered by the Ensemble "the B.E.A.M." ("the Basel Electronic Art Messengers")  at the Electronic Music Festival "Echt Zeit"  in Basel, Switzerland 1998.
